FILM ART
The KINO movement was founded in Montreal in 1999. At a KINO KABARET, filmmakers from every department come together with actors to shoot spontaneous short films, documentaries or music videos.
It starts with pitching ideas. Then teams form, and they often overlap with one another — meaning the actors usually don't just appear in one film, but in, say, five. The director of one project might be the camerawoman on another, and the boom operator on one film is the makeup artist and location scout on the next. The screenwriter and composer works on three other films, supplying all of them with music, and also jumps in as an extra and assistant director. And so on. After two or three days, a session usually ends, and the freshly made works are presented to an audience.
A KINO KABARET is a place where experiments are dared, tried out, and practiced, without any claim to perfection. Fragments of an idea can be brought to life and later developed further (or discarded). We work here together just like in a laboratory. That's why the room where the whole KINO KABARET group gathers is called the KINO LAB. The inspiration is what matters — the unique KINO KABARET flow, which you only understand once you've experienced it. But at some point, out of a possibly shaky video with no sound design and no color correction, an idea for a Netflix series or a feature film might emerge. Even the German Short Film Award has gone to a film made at a KINO KABARET — namely "Hostel" by Daniel Popat.
I've also used Kino Kabarets to test out ideas for larger projects I was already planning, as a distilled short version before the actual shoot — for example 2018 in Budapest, where a spontaneous short-film version of Time of Moulting came about.
